Culture is a combination of shared values and traditions that evolve over a period of time. This culture also gives birth to a language that is best understood by the inhabitants of that culture. No two different cultures can have a common language and no two different languages can have a common culture. If one desires to have a common language at two different cultures, he or she will have to bring the cultures to a common point. Otherwise the desire would only remain a desire.
Remaining in a culture, education and knowledge can best be gained in the language of that culture. The thoughts, the vision, the creativity is best brought up when we think, realize it into a speech and say it in our own language. If we want to enhance our learning powers, innovation and creativity, we will have to do it by educating our selves in the language of our culture.
Coming to the point, what I want to propose is that if we want to have the highest level of science and technology, research and development, creativity and innovation, step into our home land Pakistan, we will have to change the whole education system from English to Urdu. Many people say that it is too late to do it but I personally feel that it is never late to bring about a good change; the change that will have a major impact on every aspect of our life.
The other way round to enhance learning and creativity could be to adopt the culture of English and the American people as we have adopted their language. In my point of view, none of the readers would agree to leave the Islamic culture and go hand in hand with the western culture. So, there remains only one option and that is to adopt our national language Urdu.
It is not bad to learn English and other languages rather it is off a great importance to be a bilingual or multilingual. At the same time language should be learnt for the sake of learning the language only, not for adopting it as a mode of education.
The reason why I am emphasizing on the use of Urdu as a language of education is that when we live in a culture and use the language of another culture, there lies a conflict of personality, an intra personality conflict. When we live in Pakistani culture, we obey all the rules and regulations of that culture except one i.e. language. We eat Pakistani food, we drink Pakistani beverages, we dress up according to our culture, we celebrate our rituals, we even speak our own language most of the times but when it comes to education and learning, we use English language. When ever there lies a conflict, it deteriorates the standard of an ongoing activity.
When we talk about organizations and societies and the conflicts within them, we do a lot of efforts to resolve these conflicts. We lay down a set of rules and regulations and principles to solve intra society and intra organizational conflicts. We set up laws and invest heavily on courts to solve conflicts. Unfortunately, we have never realized to solve a conflict that lies within everyone.
The method of implementation of this plan would be to start it from the basic level. Our primary, middle and secondary level of education in most parts of country is already in Urdu. Higher secondary should also be molded into Urdu. For the bachelor and the master level only we will have to put in a lot of efforts. These efforts will not go waste but will prove their fruitfulness in years to come when we will also produce new technologies and advance methods for doing things with much less effort than what we do now. We would save all the effort that we waste in overcoming the intra personality conflict and put that to the actual research and development activities.
One more thing that I would like to add here is that emphasis on English language should be given right from the start of the education and not when a child passes this primary level. But again this emphasis should only be for the sake of learning a language.
